Engineering.

He says his solution was inspired by his father.

鈥淢y dad is a mechanical engineering professor at a university in Japan, and he knows a lot about manufacturing materials with porous, three-dimensional structures,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 how I got the idea to make my own 3D-printed soil construct, which could retain water for a week or more.

鈥淭hat way, I wouldn鈥檛 have to go into the lab and water the plants so often.鈥

The innovation 鈥 which Sharif came up as an undergraduate working in the lab of Keiko Yoshioka, a professor in the department of cell and systems biology in 茄子直播鈥檚 Faculty of Arts & Science 鈥 is one of several that now underpins Lyrata, a startup that grows fresh produce for caterers and high-end restaurants across the Greater Toronto Area.

The company, which got its start in a greenhouse on 茄子直播鈥檚 St. George campus, has recently expanded with operations at 茄子直播 Scarborough and Casa Loma, a museum, event space and historic site in midtown Toronto.

Growing plants without soil, known as hydroponics, is a technique commonly used in greenhouses worldwide. But Sharif and his team see an opportunity to make the industry more sustainable, starting with the soil replacement that the plants grow in.

鈥淭he product that almost everyone uses today is basically the same as house insulation,鈥 Sharif says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 made from rocks that are mined in remote places and shipped hundreds of kilometres to a production facility, where they are heated to thousands of degrees in a giant furnace to make a porous, chemically inert material. This material then needs to be shipped again to where it鈥檚 needed, and when you鈥檙e finished, you throw it in the garbage.鈥

By contrast, Lyrata鈥檚 SmartSoil is 3D-printed using biopolymers such as polylactic acid, which is derived from corn. These materials can be locally sourced and require much lower temperatures to melt and form into porous structures.

When the growing cycle is complete, the product goes through a low-heat proprietary cleaning process and can be used again. Sharif says that SmartSoil has a total lifespan of about two years, after which it can be composted along with crop residue. Together, these changes greatly lower the carbon footprint of indoor farming.

In 2020, Sharif and his co-founders brought his idea to The Entrepreneurship Hatchery, 茄子直播 Engineering鈥檚 startup incubator and one of several entrepreneurship hubs across 茄子直播鈥檚 three campuses. Through the Hatchery鈥檚 Nest process, they were connected with business mentors, including alumnus Xavier Tang, a consultant and venture capitalist who still advises the company today.

Over the next few years, the team evolved, with some original members leaving and others joining. They include Leo Hua, who has been pivotal to speeding the development of 3D printable soil. The concept evolved, too, as the team realized that producing food was a better business for Lyrata than rather than selling their growth medium to other farmers.

The Hatchery team 鈥 in particular, Executive Director Joseph Orozco, Go-To-Market Lead Erika J. Murray and a team of work-study students, mentors and legal externs 鈥 helped Lyrata develop their technology and business. In 2022, the Hatchery provided $155,000 in seed funding, enabling the founders to be employed by their company and further supporting business development. The funding also enabled the company to rent greenhouse space on campus, where they began growing lettuce to provide to Spaces and Experiences at 茄子直播.

Lyrata also developed something new: a modular unit that works exclusively with their SmartSoil and contains everything required to produce a variety of indoor crops 鈥 from lights and growth medium to irrigation systems.

鈥淣one of these technological and business developments would have taken place without the generous support of the over 50 Hatchery mentors, work-study students, and legal externs who contributed to our success,鈥 says Sharif.

鈥淥ur current concept is what we call farming-as-a-service,鈥 Hua adds. 鈥淭he SmartGrow unit we developed is small enough to fit into a standard parking spot. Our clients sign a contract with us to place a unit on their site and we take care of everything from planting to harvesting.

鈥淔or a flat fee, they get a self-contained farm that provides a reliable quantity of their desired crop over a set period of time.鈥

In addition to providing a locally sourced, sustainable product, Sharif says the approach can also help mitigate fluctuations in the price of wholesale produce.

鈥淚n Canada, most of our lettuce comes from California, which has been dealing with drought and many other issues,鈥 says Sharif. 鈥淪upply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 were also a big challenge for restaurants, which have very thin margins to begin with. At one point, the price of lettuce increased by a factor of six, so you can imagine the effect that would have.鈥

So far, Lyrata has produced more than 15 different types of crops, including basil, parsley and mizuna, also known as Japanese mustard greens.

Support from the 茄子直播 Engineering community has been key to Lyrata鈥檚 success.

For example, it was a 茄子直播 Engineering alumni connection that recently led to Lyrata launching an installation at the historic Casa Loma museum and landmark in Toronto.

鈥淟yrata鈥檚 competitive edge is that they provide an on-site, full service and they do not take up very much space,鈥 says Nikol Watlikiewicz, Casa Loma鈥檚 horticulture and grounds manager. 鈥淚n a small corner of our potting shed, we were able to build two grow units that provide a good yield weekly, without having to train our staff on the complicated system.

鈥淕rowing indoors gives us the stability and control that traditional agriculture does not. It鈥檚 an excellent example of how engineers can help solve the global food crisis with innovative thinking.鈥

In August, Lyrata launched another growing unit at 茄子直播 Scarborough, located within the Harmony Commons Dining Hall.

The priority for the next few years is growing Lyrata鈥檚 crop offerings and client base with ongoing support from The Hatchery. The incubator has facilitated graduate student placements through Mitacs, with matching funds. It also backed a recent $167,500 project with the Ontario and Canadian governments through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership program to further advance the yield and efficiency of the SmartSoil system.

鈥淭he fact we鈥檝e been able to come this far in such a short time is in large part due to the help we鈥檝e had from 茄子直播 Engineering, and especially the Entrepreneurship Hatchery,鈥 says Sharif.

鈥淲hether it was getting seed funding, finding mentors, hiring work-study students or making important connections through their alumni network, we wouldn鈥檛 be here without their support.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Wed, 11 Sep 2024 15:07:18 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309382 at Waabi, founded by 茄子直播's Raquel Urtasun, raises US$200 million to launch self-driving trucks /news/waabi-founded-u-t-s-raquel-urtasun-raises-us200-million-launch-self-driving-trucks Waabi, founded by 茄子直播's Raquel Urtasun, raises US$200 million to launch self-driving trucks

lanthierj Wed, 06/19/2024 - 16:26

Cutline

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Global Lens

Artificial Intelligence

Department of Computer Science

Entrepreneurship

Faculty of Arts & It shouldn't be this painful or scary or sketchy.鈥

Driving schools are appealing to new drivers because they issue beginner driver education certificates, which make new drivers eligible for insurance discounts and lets them take their road tests sooner. To receive one, students must complete 10 hours of in-car driving lessons, 10 hours of homework and 20 hours of classroom learning in-person or virtually.

Many Ontario driving schools are small businesses using little technology, Castaldo says, and tracking everything on pen and paper means information can fall through the cracks.

Kruzee, by contrast, is instead digitizing the experience: all learning except in-car lessons is done online, meaning a student鈥檚 progress is tracked automatically and there鈥檚 no faking whether they鈥檝e finished the classwork or homework.

Kruzee co-founders Mikael Castaldo (left) and Osama Siddique (right) both have backgrounds in management (supplied image)

Castaldo and co-founder Osama Siddique, who earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration from 茄子直播 Scarborough in 2017, have brought similar accountability to in-car lessons, which has also helped them combat a frustration they鈥檝e seen often in their research and experienced themselves.

They found that 80 per cent of Yelp reviews for prominent Ontario driving schools were negative and largely hinged on the process of booking in-car lessons. In many reviews, students recount scheduling lessons by texting or calling an instructor and then hoping both parties remembered when and where the lesson would take place 鈥 not to mention how many hours of instruction had been completed.

鈥淲e were surprised that it was impossible to book lessons online, impossible to know anything about your instructor before you get in the car with them and that the theoretical part was still pretty analog,鈥 Castaldo says. 鈥淧eople complain about booking delays, last-minute cancellations, instructors ghosting them.鈥

Modernizing driver's ed

Kruzee, by contrast, allows students to use a website to browse profiles and reviews of driving instructors and provides information about which car they will be driving. They can schedule their appointments and get a text to remind them 24 hours before their lesson takes place. Instructors also record students鈥 progress and bookings through a dedicated app.

In the coming months, the company is launching a feature that will have instructors track both the hours a student has completed and their specific strengths and areas for improvement, including parallel parking or lane changes. The data will be used to create a custom report card, which instructors can use to further customize lessons.

Kruzee has also created a rigorous process to screen instructors, including extensive background checks and three rounds of interviews. It also conducts regular checks of the operation.

The digital-first approach has helped keep costs low and the company has partnered with two Canadian startups to offer further discounts. For example, Kruzee students get $500 off their first used car bought through Clutch, which lets customers buy a car online, have it delivered to their house, drive it for 10 days and, if it鈥檚 not the right fit, return it free of charge. Students can also compare insurance rates with five free quotes from Walnut Insurance.

In addition, Kruzee has a course to prepare students for the first written test needed to get a driver鈥檚 licence, the G1, and students who take it are given a full refund if they don鈥檛 pass on their first try.

So far, the startup has expanded across Ontario and into British Columbia 鈥 and has sights set on entering the huge U.S. market.

鈥淲e've been getting a pretty phenomenal response so far in Vancouver, because people are facing the same problems there, and we know it's a similar experience throughout the U.S.,鈥 Castaldo says. 鈥淲e鈥檝e created a model that gives driving instructors and students what they're looking for 鈥 but better.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 09 May 2024 18:37:41 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307808 at Domes near Highland Creek Valley offer a space to link Indigenous knowledge, community and entrepreneurship /news/domes-near-highland-creek-valley-offer-space-link-indigenous-knowledge-community-and Domes near Highland Creek Valley offer a space to link Indigenous knowledge, community and entrepreneurship

Christopher.Sorensen <time datetime="2024-04-25T16:05:35-04:00" title="Thursday, April 25, 2024 - What鈥檚 your take on how AI is evolving?

Over the next decade, virtually every bit of software will be replaced by artificial intelligence or embedded with it. The implications for our world and the global economy are profound.

Traditional software is hard-coded and static. Once shipped and deployed, it never improves until the next version is shipped and replaces it. Soon, all software will be powered by AI that learns and improves, often in real-time. Built around learning algorithms that adapt to new situations, AI software is more efficient and effective. This is particularly true for generative AI, which can create new data or software code on its own, without the need for human input.

This coming software replacement cycle will have an extraordinary impact on our economy. In addition, AI will help unlock new discoveries across science. These are Industrial Revolution-sized opportunities 鈥 happening simultaneously and enabled by one technology.

One of my personal motivations for starting Radical was to invest in companies that would help solve the biggest challenges facing humanity. When we were thinking of selling our AI company, Layer 6, to focus on building the leading AI investment firm, I said to my Radical co-founder and University of Toronto alum, Tomi Poutanen: 鈥淎I will help cure cancers. Let鈥檚 help cure cancer.鈥

How would you describe venture capital鈥檚 role when it comes to responsible AI development?

Venture capital is an essential driver of economic value and innovation. Only half of one per cent of public companies received venture funding, but VC-backed companies account for 40 per cent of total U.S. market capitalization. VC plays a disproportionate role in the economy, especially when it comes to the development of new technologies such as AI. OpenAI, Cohere and the startups behind the large language models that helped bring AI to the mainstream over the past year received multiple rounds of funding from venture capital firms. Google and Meta 鈥 whose industrial labs created some of the biggest AI breakthroughs of the last decade 鈥 were, at one time, fuelled by venture capital.

At Radical, we are committed to developing AI technologies and applications that improve the future for all, and we believe that the venture capital industry 鈥 the underwriters of tomorrow鈥檚 innovations 鈥 must approach investments in AI with a sense of shared responsibility. Last year, in partnership with the Vector Institute, we launched the Responsible AI for Startups (RAIS) framework 鈥 an open-source resource for investors evaluating investments in AI technologies. RAIS is a practical tool to help VCs assess early-stage AI companies and technologies across responsibility and safety considerations.

Let's talk about Cohere, a startup that has numerous 茄子直播 ties and several high-profile backers, including yourself. How is it different from other companies developing large language models?

Cohere is one of a cohort of companies, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, that is developing the world鈥檚 most sophisticated large language models. Unlike most competitors in the space, Cohere鈥檚 focus is offering a cloud-agnostic, privacy-preserving solution for enterprise customers, which include Oracle and McKinsey.

Cohere鈥檚 founders are three Canadian entrepreneurs [and former 茄子直播 computer science students]: Aidan Gomez, the company鈥檚 CEO and one of the authors of the groundbreaking transformers paper that ushered in the era of modern generative AI; Nick Frosst, protege of deep learning pioneer and [University Professor Emeritus] Geoffrey Hinton, and their classmate Ivan Zhang. Today, the team includes many of the inventors of some of the most widely used modern AI techniques.

How would you describe Cohere's growth to date 鈥 and where do you see it heading in the future?

Radical was deeply engaged with Cohere prior to company incorporation and invested the very first cheque into the company in 2019. Since then, Cohere has developed world-class language models that compete directly with the best models in the world, grown the team to more than 200 people across offices in Toronto, San Francisco, New York City and London, and signed many global enterprises as customers. It is now one of the most valuable AI companies in the world. Given the technical complexities of working with cutting-edge AI models, there are few companies that have the experience and expertise to push the field forward while also delivering huge value to industry. Cohere leads the pack.

What advice would you give researchers or students who are keen on building a company in the AI space?

Tackle the most important problems. Building a business aimed at making incremental advances on existing technologies may find a market in the near-term. However, in the long run, these businesses are vulnerable to competition or commodification by existing AI solutions. Whether it鈥檚 tackling climate change, increasing business productivity or curing cancer, AI is a technology capable of taking on many of the world鈥檚 biggest challenges.

It鈥檚 also important to remember that we are still in the very early innings of the AI revolution. The field will continue to evolve and change. There鈥檚 a very real opportunity right now for young entrepreneurs to shape the future of this important technology.

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 04 Apr 2024 22:39:50 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307215 at 茄子直播 grads aim to electrify - and simplify - the package delivery business /news/u-t-grads-aim-electrify-and-simplify-package-delivery-business 茄子直播 grads aim to electrify - and simplify - the package delivery business

Christopher.Sorensen Wed, 03/20/2024 - 13:33

Cutline

GoBolt co-founder Mark Ang, who graduated from Rotman Commerce in 2017, says he and co-founder Heindrik Bernabe, an alum of 茄子直播 Engineering, 鈥wanted to be change-makers in an antiquated industry鈥 (photo by Kemeisha McDonald)

David Goldberg

Topic

Our Community

茄子直播

Electric Cars

Entrepreneurship

Faculty of Applied Science & He founded Second Closet, a storage service aimed at international students who needed to clear out their dorm rooms for the summer. Ang鈥檚 team rented trucks and scurried around campus to collect hundreds of boxes and random items. It was a lot of driving, a lot of parking tickets and a lot of stairs.

By offering a convenient service for a fraction of its competitors鈥 prices and an effective, flyer-based direct marketing campaign, the venture soon experienced rapid growth. Within two weeks, Second Closet was making $20,000 a month 鈥 pushing its resources to the limit.

鈥淓very year got progressively crazier,鈥 says Ang. 鈥淲e had a dozen five-tonne trucks around 茄子直播 every day in April and September. At the time, using EVs commercially was a novel idea, but the newly formed GoBolt already had relationships with EV makers in Ontario and Quebec, as well as goods producers who cared about the fate of freight and addressing climate change.

鈥淲e wanted to be a 21st-century business for 21st-century brands, shoppers and merchants,鈥 says Ang, whose clients include Endy mattresses and Frank And Oak apparel.

鈥淲e wanted to be change-makers in an antiquated industry.鈥

GoBolt鈥檚 made-in-Canada electric delivery vehicles can travel up to 400 kilometres on a single charge, depending on the payload and the EV battery鈥檚 natural enemy 鈥 freezing weather. She initially grew the startup out of The Hub, 茄子直播 Scarborough's early-stage entrepreneurship incubator.

SnapWrite has since enjoyed success in pitch competitions including at The Hub and The Bridge, another campus-linked accelerator of 茄子直播 Scarborough, winning around $40,000 in funding without having to give up equity. The startup has also attracted funding from big-league investors including FounderFuel, Inovia Capital and Panache Ventures.

Rastogi says the idea for SnapWrite emerged from a business she operated when she was a student. 鈥淲hile in school, I ran my own resale store and met a woman who ran a pre-loved clothing store,鈥 she says. 鈥淲hen I looked her up on Instagram, there was this endless feed of other accounts that were doing the same thing. This is a market with challenges that have not been fully addressed yet.鈥

Rastogi explains that demand for second-hand clothing is exploding, but because each pre-owned product is unique, online postings made to sell them must be too 鈥 which poses a challenge for businesses trying to keep up with growing inventory.

SnapWrite helps these businesses save on time and labour by enabling them to upload hundreds of photos at once, with the platform giving each item a detailed digital identity in about 15 seconds 鈥 a task Rastogi says would take a human worker five to 15 minutes.

What鈥檚 more, SnapWrite also integrates with major web platforms such as Shopify, Wix and Magento to automatically sync clothes鈥 attributes with websites, so that garments can be posted automatically and appear in the right place when shoppers are suggested similar products.

These features have earned SnapWrite a client base of around 50 resellers and counting, including one that has more than 35 stores. The software has digitized 25,000 items and generated more than 700,000 product attributes, saving its users upwards of 6,000 hours, according to the company.

The startup has also managed to rope clothing brands into the second-hand cycle through an initiative in which partner brands ask customers to bring used products back to their stores. These items are then run through the AI and offered to second-hand stores to resell. This model has already saved 25,000 pieces of clothing from ending up in landfills, says Rastogi.

SnapWrite鈥檚 AI generates a unique inventory number, which Rastogi envisions could enable a digital passport system of sorts for used clothing. For example, a T-shirt may get digitized by SnapWrite, sold by a thrift store, and then re-donated months later to another second-hand store that also uses SnapWrite 鈥 or uploaded to the startup's consignment platform. Even more time would be saved should the AI recognize the shirt and be able to pull up its data.

Having identified a need in the clothing market, Rastogi says she and her brother are now focused on keeping SnapWrite's momentum going. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no software in the Canadian market solving this problem in the resale market right now, so we decided to do it.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 08 Mar 2024 14:25:51 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 306615 at
