The AHEHC was established in 2022 to drive primary health-care workforce education, entrepreneurship and innovation across Africa.

This is Naturinda鈥檚 second time studying abroad with the Mastercard Foundation. He became the first in his family to study outside the country when he was awarded a scholarship to pursue an undergraduate degree in laboratory medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.

He later returned home during the COVID-19 pandemic to volunteer in the clinical microbiology and immunology departments at a local hospital. The experience prompted him to think about how to improve systems that were suddenly facing new pressures at already burdened hospitals 鈥 namely the continued use of paper records.

Medical records are the building blocks for developing efficient and effective intelligent medicine models, he says, while intelligent medicine refers to the use of machine learning models to process medical data and reduce errors in patient care. Large datasets may also allow medical professionals to spot health patterns 鈥 an emerging epidemic, for example 鈥 to better prepare for public health threats.

However, low-to-middle-income countries face many barriers to digitizing medical data, including limited access to technology and the absence of standardized data formats. The use of paper records also causes delays in retrieving laboratory results and makes it difficult to understand patients鈥 medical histories efficiently.

鈥淭he digitization of medical records is essential for developing and training predictive models,鈥 Naturinda says. 鈥淯nique electronic datasets from these communities provide the more accurate and reliable information needed to account for unique socio-cultural factors and effectively develop models tailored to address those specific challenges.鈥

Naturinda will work under the guidance of Karim Keshavjee, an assistant professor and director of the master of health informatics program. In addition to intelligent medicine, Naturinda says he also has a key interest in implementation science, or the study of methods to ensure research is translated into policy, programs and startups.

One of Canada鈥檚 few professional graduate programs in the field, the master of health informatics program provides students with the skills and strategic vision to take on leadership positions in health-care landscape.

The opportunity to learn industry-specific knowledge from health leaders is what made the program a perfect fit, Naturinda says.

鈥淥ne of the reasons I chose the MHI program is because it is training us to be leaders, innovators and policymakers. I wanted to seek mentorship from people who were making a big impact in strengthening health-care systems in Canada.鈥

Public health isn鈥檛 the only field where Naturinda is hoping to make an impact. He also wants to help others as an entrepreneur 鈥 a journey that鈥檚 already well underway.

During his undergrad, he co-founded the Nugget Poultry Farm to help smallholder farmers in western Uganda raise poultry more effectively and improve food access back home. The venture aims to support 1,000 farmers in 20 communities by 2027 and has received a Social Venture Challenge Award from the Mastercard Foundation and the Resolution Project.

Naturinda enhanced his business knowledge through the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship on Entrepreneurship at Queen鈥檚 University. Now a program coach, he has trained more than 500 entrepreneurs from Africa-based startups addressing various issues in agribusiness, climate change and health care.

Naturinda is eager to tap into 茄子直播鈥檚 network of entrepreneurs and has wasted no time reaching out to various groups, including the Black Founders Network.

鈥淲hen I train entrepreneurs, I see the impact of them pitching their ventures or winning a grant. It鈥檚 the type of impact that I want to see with my research, and bridging those two passions is an ideal step forward,鈥 Naturinda says.

鈥淎s I progress at 茄子直播, I look forward to leveraging opportunities that speak to my background in entrepreneurship, health care and research to make sure that I implement them together.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Mon, 07 Oct 2024 13:40:31 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309742 at 3D-printed soil? 茄子直播 startup expands sustainable urban farming footprint in Toronto /news/3d-printed-soil-u-t-startup-expands-sustainable-urban-farming-footprint-toronto 3D-printed soil? 茄子直播 startup expands sustainable urban farming footprint in Toronto

Christopher.Sorensen Wed, 09/11/2024 - 11:07

Cutline

Leo Hua and Adnan Sharif show off fresh basil that was grown with Lyrata鈥檚 sustainable farming system at Toronto鈥檚 Casa Loma (photo by Liz Intac)

Tyler Irving

Topic

Our Community

茄子直播

Cities

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship Hatchery

Faculty of Applied Science & Science 鈥 is one of several that now underpins Lyrata, a startup that grows fresh produce for caterers and high-end restaurants across the Greater Toronto Area.

The company, which got its start in a greenhouse on 茄子直播鈥檚 St. George campus, has recently expanded with operations at 茄子直播 Scarborough and Casa Loma, a museum, event space and historic site in midtown Toronto.

Growing plants without soil, known as hydroponics, is a technique commonly used in greenhouses worldwide. But Sharif and his team see an opportunity to make the industry more sustainable, starting with the soil replacement that the plants grow in.

鈥淭he product that almost everyone uses today is basically the same as house insulation,鈥 Sharif says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 made from rocks that are mined in remote places and shipped hundreds of kilometres to a production facility, where they are heated to thousands of degrees in a giant furnace to make a porous, chemically inert material. This material then needs to be shipped again to where it鈥檚 needed, and when you鈥檙e finished, you throw it in the garbage.鈥

By contrast, Lyrata鈥檚 SmartSoil is 3D-printed using biopolymers such as polylactic acid, which is derived from corn. These materials can be locally sourced and require much lower temperatures to melt and form into porous structures.

When the growing cycle is complete, the product goes through a low-heat proprietary cleaning process and can be used again. Sharif says that SmartSoil has a total lifespan of about two years, after which it can be composted along with crop residue. Together, these changes greatly lower the carbon footprint of indoor farming.

In 2020, Sharif and his co-founders brought his idea to The Entrepreneurship Hatchery, 茄子直播 Engineering鈥檚 startup incubator and one of several entrepreneurship hubs across 茄子直播鈥檚 three campuses. Through the Hatchery鈥檚 Nest process, they were connected with business mentors, including alumnus Xavier Tang, a consultant and venture capitalist who still advises the company today.

Over the next few years, the team evolved, with some original members leaving and others joining. They include Leo Hua, who has been pivotal to speeding the development of 3D printable soil. The concept evolved, too, as the team realized that producing food was a better business for Lyrata than rather than selling their growth medium to other farmers.

The Hatchery team 鈥 in particular, Executive Director Joseph Orozco, Go-To-Market Lead Erika J. Murray and a team of work-study students, mentors and legal externs 鈥 helped Lyrata develop their technology and business. In 2022, the Hatchery provided $155,000 in seed funding, enabling the founders to be employed by their company and further supporting business development. The funding also enabled the company to rent greenhouse space on campus, where they began growing lettuce to provide to Spaces and Experiences at 茄子直播.

Lyrata also developed something new: a modular unit that works exclusively with their SmartSoil and contains everything required to produce a variety of indoor crops 鈥 from lights and growth medium to irrigation systems.

鈥淣one of these technological and business developments would have taken place without the generous support of the over 50 Hatchery mentors, work-study students, and legal externs who contributed to our success,鈥 says Sharif.

鈥淥ur current concept is what we call farming-as-a-service,鈥 Hua adds. 鈥淭he SmartGrow unit we developed is small enough to fit into a standard parking spot. Our clients sign a contract with us to place a unit on their site and we take care of everything from planting to harvesting.

鈥淔or a flat fee, they get a self-contained farm that provides a reliable quantity of their desired crop over a set period of time.鈥

In addition to providing a locally sourced, sustainable product, Sharif says the approach can also help mitigate fluctuations in the price of wholesale produce.

鈥淚n Canada, most of our lettuce comes from California, which has been dealing with drought and many other issues,鈥 says Sharif. 鈥淪upply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 were also a big challenge for restaurants, which have very thin margins to begin with. At one point, the price of lettuce increased by a factor of six, so you can imagine the effect that would have.鈥

So far, Lyrata has produced more than 15 different types of crops, including basil, parsley and mizuna, also known as Japanese mustard greens.

Support from the 茄子直播 Engineering community has been key to Lyrata鈥檚 success.

For example, it was a 茄子直播 Engineering alumni connection that recently led to Lyrata launching an installation at the historic Casa Loma museum and landmark in Toronto.

鈥淟yrata鈥檚 competitive edge is that they provide an on-site, full service and they do not take up very much space,鈥 says Nikol Watlikiewicz, Casa Loma鈥檚 horticulture and grounds manager. 鈥淚n a small corner of our potting shed, we were able to build two grow units that provide a good yield weekly, without having to train our staff on the complicated system.

鈥淕rowing indoors gives us the stability and control that traditional agriculture does not. It鈥檚 an excellent example of how engineers can help solve the global food crisis with innovative thinking.鈥

In August, Lyrata launched another growing unit at 茄子直播 Scarborough, located within the Harmony Commons Dining Hall.

The priority for the next few years is growing Lyrata鈥檚 crop offerings and client base with ongoing support from The Hatchery. To receive one, students must complete 10 hours of in-car driving lessons, 10 hours of homework and 20 hours of classroom learning in-person or virtually.

Many Ontario driving schools are small businesses using little technology, Castaldo says, and tracking everything on pen and paper means information can fall through the cracks.

Kruzee, by contrast, is instead digitizing the experience: all learning except in-car lessons is done online, meaning a student鈥檚 progress is tracked automatically and there鈥檚 no faking whether they鈥檝e finished the classwork or homework.

Kruzee co-founders Mikael Castaldo (left) and Osama Siddique (right) both have backgrounds in management (supplied image)

Castaldo and co-founder Osama Siddique, who earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration from 茄子直播 Scarborough in 2017, have brought similar accountability to in-car lessons, which has also helped them combat a frustration they鈥檝e seen often in their research and experienced themselves.

They found that 80 per cent of Yelp reviews for prominent Ontario driving schools were negative and largely hinged on the process of booking in-car lessons. In many reviews, students recount scheduling lessons by texting or calling an instructor and then hoping both parties remembered when and where the lesson would take place 鈥 not to mention how many hours of instruction had been completed.

鈥淲e were surprised that it was impossible to book lessons online, impossible to know anything about your instructor before you get in the car with them and that the theoretical part was still pretty analog,鈥 Castaldo says. 鈥淧eople complain about booking delays, last-minute cancellations, instructors ghosting them.鈥

Modernizing driver's ed

Kruzee, by contrast, allows students to use a website to browse profiles and reviews of driving instructors and provides information about which car they will be driving. They can schedule their appointments and get a text to remind them 24 hours before their lesson takes place. Instructors also record students鈥 progress and bookings through a dedicated app.

In the coming months, the company is launching a feature that will have instructors track both the hours a student has completed and their specific strengths and areas for improvement, including parallel parking or lane changes. The data will be used to create a custom report card, which instructors can use to further customize lessons.

Kruzee has also created a rigorous process to screen instructors, including extensive background checks and three rounds of interviews. It also conducts regular checks of the operation.

The digital-first approach has helped keep costs low and the company has partnered with two Canadian startups to offer further discounts. For example, Kruzee students get $500 off their first used car bought through Clutch, which lets customers buy a car online, have it delivered to their house, drive it for 10 days and, if it鈥檚 not the right fit, return it free of charge. Students can also compare insurance rates with five free quotes from Walnut Insurance.

In addition, Kruzee has a course to prepare students for the first written test needed to get a driver鈥檚 licence, the G1, and students who take it are given a full refund if they don鈥檛 pass on their first try.

So far, the startup has expanded across Ontario and into British Columbia 鈥 and has sights set on entering the huge U.S. market.

鈥淲e've been getting a pretty phenomenal response so far in Vancouver, because people are facing the same problems there, and we know it's a similar experience throughout the U.S.,鈥 Castaldo says. 鈥淲e鈥檝e created a model that gives driving instructors and students what they're looking for 鈥 but better.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 09 May 2024 18:37:41 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307808 at Domes near Highland Creek Valley offer a space to link Indigenous knowledge, community and entrepreneurship /news/domes-near-highland-creek-valley-offer-space-link-indigenous-knowledge-community-and Domes near Highland Creek Valley offer a space to link Indigenous knowledge, community and entrepreneurship

Christopher.Sorensen <time datetime="2024-04-25T16:05:35-04:00" title="Thursday, April 25, 2024 - The only option is supportive care like dialysis which requires patients to rearrange their lives around lengthy hospital treatment sessions.

Atorvia is looking to change that. A woman-led biotech startup headquartered in the Ottawa area, Atorvia is developing novel treatments that target the molecular causes underlying kidney damage.

The company was recently named the inaugural winner of the Blue Ticket competition at the University of Toronto Mississauga鈥檚 SpinUp wet lab incubator. Sponsored by pharmaceutical company Merck, the Blue Ticket program aims to empower the next generation of global health innovators.

As prize winner, Atorvia receives a free one-year membership to SpinUp, an up-front cash prize and mentorship from scientific and business leaders at Merck.

鈥淭his opportunity is game-changing for us,鈥 said Jane Lapon, founder of Atorvia. 鈥淚t will help us to accelerate faster.鈥

Among Atorvia鈥檚 key innovations is a treatment that addresses acute kidney injury that occurs as a complication of cardiac surgery. The company is developing medicine that can be administered before a patient undergoes cardiac surgery, in order to help prevent kidney failure.

While preliminary experiments have been carried out, the company needed dedicated space and equipment to conduct further lab work 鈥 something that鈥檚 hard to come by for biotech startups with limited financial resources. 鈥淭he fact that SpinUp was there with availability, and was subsidized, was fantastic,鈥 Lapon said.

鈥淏ecause we鈥檙e getting the mentoring with Merck as well, it means that we can develop this medicine and hopefully get it to patients sooner. We鈥檝e got this expertise to help us along the way.鈥

Lapon said startups often face a 鈥渧ery lonely journey,鈥 but that the mentorship and financial resources provided by Merck, as well as SpinUp鈥檚 vast network, will provide much-needed support. 鈥淥ne of the advantages of SpinUp is that we鈥檝e got access to University of Toronto researchers and the potential to then partner with some of the researchers, as well as students and co-op students,鈥 Lapon said. 鈥淲ith the resources we have, there is a very high probability that we would have this ready to go into trials during our first year at SpinUp.鈥

She said team is currently gearing up to re-run previous experiments and conduct new ones in order to validate the medicine and prepare for filing with health authorities.

Kent Moore, vice-principal, research at 茄子直播 Mississauga, said he looks forward to tracking Atorvia's progress. 鈥淪trong partners like Merck enable us to enhance the support SpinUp offers to propel promising early-stage startups,鈥 said Moore. 鈥淲e're delighted to be working with Merck to help drive Atorvia鈥檚 innovative approaches forward through Merck鈥檚 mentorship support and SpinUp鈥檚 wet lab capabilities and programming.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 19 Apr 2024 16:23:12 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 307602 at
