Adriana Diaz Lozano Patino, an undergraduate student studying engineering science in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, has been selected as winner of the Troost ILead Difference Maker Award.

“Diaz Lozano Patino’s strong character, resilience, passionate commitment to social justice, and transformational leadership qualities are evident in her ability to motivate peers and lead change in our Engineering community,” the citation reads. “Her humble leadership in the Hi-Skule and Skule Mental Wellness STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] outreach teams references a fierce and heartfelt dedication to serving others.”

Diaz Lozano Patino’s relentless commitment to global water and energy issues in low and middle-income countries has taken research initiatives in new directions.

Through her involvement in the Water and Energy Research Lab (WERL), Diaz Lozano Patino has worked on analysis of coupled ultraviolet reverse osmosis systems in Bangladesh, rainwater harvesting technologies with field partners in Mexico’s Isla Urbana and a Centre for Global Engineering sanitation initiative in peri-urban areas of Mexico City, where she grew up.

Diaz Lozano Patino aspires to continue her studies with a masters of applied science degree, focusing on global development, STEM outreach, field research and sustainable development projects.

Professor William R. Cluett of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has been recognized with a 2020 OCUFA Teaching Award from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations for exceptional contributions to postsecondary education through teaching and leadership.

“Over the past 25 years Professor Cluett has played a leading role in developing many of the programs that make ��ֱ�� Engineering one of the world’s best engineering schools,” said Dean Chris Yip. “On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to him on this well-deserved honour.”

Cluett, who has used innovative techniques in his classroom for decades, has also helped reshape the university’s approach to engineering education. He led the development and launch of the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) and played a key role in the creation of the flagship first–year design and communication course: Engineering Strategies and Practice. He also led the development of the major in engineering mathematics, statistics, and finance and oversaw a significant expansion of summer research opportunities for engineering science students.

In 2014, Cluett received the Bill Burgess Teacher of the Year Award for Large Classes and in 2016, he received the Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2018, he received the President’s Teaching Award, ��ֱ��’s highest honour for teaching.

Four members of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been inducted as fellows of the Canadian Engineering Education Association.

The honour recognizes noteworthy service to engineering education, engineering leadership, or engineering design education. The ��ֱ�� Engineering inductees were among 21 engineering education professionals from across Canada in the association’s inaugural cohort.

They are:

Professor Greg Evans of the department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry and the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education & Practice (ISTEP)
Professor Jason Foster of the department of civil and mineral engineering and the division of engineering science
Professor Susan McCahan of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering; McCahan is also ��ֱ��'s vice-provost, academic programs and vice-provost, innovations in undergraduate education
Professor Lisa Romkey of the division of engineering science and ISTEP

“It is truly an honour to be included in this group of highly respected engineering educators,” Romkey told University of Toronto Engineering News. “These individuals have carved out spaces in their own institutions for this critical work, and I am lucky to consider many of the Fellows close colleagues and mentors.”
