Nisrin Elamin, an assistant professor in the department of anthropology at the Faculty of Arts & Science and the African Studies Program at New College, has been awarded a 2024 American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship.

The fellowships are presented annually to “scholars who are poised to make original and significant contributions to knowledge in any field of the humanities or interpretive social sciences.”

Elamin’s work investigates the connections between land, race, belonging and empire-making in Sudan and the broader Sahel region.

Her ACLS fellowship will support the completion of a book project titled Stratified Enclosures: Land, Capital and Empire-Making in Central Sudan.

Nearly 800 faculty members, staff and librarians from across the University of Toronto recognized their colleagues with True Blue citations in the first quarter of the fiscal year – for their outstanding contributions to service, leadership, innovation, citizenship, collaboration and commitment to equity.

In all, 59 people received a True Blue award from May through July. Winners included:

New College librarian Aneta Kwak, nominated by Kevin Edmonds on behalf of the Caribbean studies program for her support of the 2021 Diaspora Voices conference
Tee Duke, assistant director of Indigenous initiatives at ��ֱ�� Mississauga, nominated by Allison Burgess of the Sexual & Gender Diversity Office for supporting the ��ֱ�� Pride concert
Warren Bathie, fitness, strength and conditioning associate, nominated by Hart House Warden John Monahan for his inspiring leadership

“��ֱ�� is one of the world’s best universities – and it is the work of our faculty, librarians and staff that make this possible,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Erin Jackson. “It’s important we recognize these contributions as part of our day-to-day practice. Expressing gratitude for our colleagues’ work is an integral part of fostering a culture of appreciation and it makes ��ֱ�� an excellent place to work.

“I want to congratulate all of our True Blue Award winners and invite all of our faculty, librarians and staff to use True Blue to recognize their colleagues.”

Two Faculty of Arts & Science graduands are among 20 student leaders chosen from across Canada for the inaugural McCall MacBain Scholarships.

Grace Ma and AJ Bimm were chosen from 735 applicants for the scholarships, which include tuition and fees at McGill University and a living stipend of $2,000 per month.

Scholars are selected for their character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength and intellectual curiosity.

A member of Trinity College, Ma will graduate this year with a bachelor of science with a double major in environmental science and English literature. She is involved with Trinity’s literary arts journal, The Trinity Review, co-leads a university-wide environmental action group and volunteers to teach violin to youth. She plans to pursue a law degree at McGill.

Bimm is a member of New College who will graduate with an honours bachelor of arts with a double major in sociology and urban studies. Captain of the varsity track and field team, Bimm recently co-founded the BIPOC Varsity Association, a group for Black, Indigenous and people of colour student-athletes. At McGill, he will pursue a master’s degree in urban planning with a special focus on active transportation and access to housing.

Nearly two dozen members of the University of Toronto community have been recognized by the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada list published by Women’s Executive Network (WXN).

University of Toronto alumna Souvankham Thammavongsa is the winner of the 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her short story collection, How to Pronounce Knife.

The book is on Time magazine’s list of 100 Must-Read Books of 2020 and was named one of the best books of spring 2020 by The New York Times, Salon, the Millions and Vogue. It’s the first short story collection for Thammavongsa, who earned her bachelor of arts from the Faculty of Arts & Science in 2003 as a member of New College. She is also the author of four books of poetry: the 2013 Trillium Book Award for Poetry winner, Light; Found; Cluster; and Small Arguments, the 2004 winner of the ReLit Award, which she wrote while an undergraduate student at ��ֱ��.

In an interview with Arts & Science News, Thammavongsa talked about what it was like to major in English literature at ��ֱ��.

“I went to the best school in the country, and that made me so confident,” Thammavongsa said. “I wanted to be a writer and I thought, why don’t I just write?
