��ֱ��'s Sustainability Pathways Program recognized by Quacquarelli Symonds

The University of Toronto's Sustainability Pathways Program, an initiative of the President's Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability (CECCS), was shortlisted for a 2024 QS Reimagine Education Award.

Given by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Reimagine Education Awards honour innovative pedagogical approaches that boost learning outcomes and employability, as well as effective methods of teaching sustainability.

��ֱ��'s Sustainability Pathways Program was shortlisted in the category of sustainability literacy. The program combines courses, co-curricular activities, campus-as-a-living lab projects and capstone leadership training to educate students across ��ֱ��'s three campuses.

“Our goal is to ‘reach the rest’ – students who would not otherwise engage with sustainability as part of their degrees," said John Robinson, CECCS co-chair and professor in the School of the Environment and Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. "This approach is helping to shape the next generation of sustainability leaders, regardless of their field of study, while also providing a transformative educational experience for students.”

The recognition comes after ��ֱ�� was named the most sustainable university in the world by QS for the second year in a row.

The University of Toronto has been named one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for the 19th consecutive year.

The competition recognizes employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies. Winners are announced in a special magazine distributed online in The Globe & Mail.

��ֱ�� was recognized for supporting the families of its employees through an array of resources, including the dedicated Family Care Office, on-site child care options and a variety of family-friendly spaces; encouraging employees to keep fit and stay healthy with subsidized memberships to fitness facilities, health benefits coverage that extends to retirees with no age limit; and encouraging employees to save for the future with generous contributions to a defined benefit pension plan.

"The world is changing so fast that employers must constantly evolve to meet their employees’ needs", said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, ��ֱ��'s vice-president, people strategy, equity and culture.

Christine Szustaczek, the University of Toronto's vice-president, communications, has been inducted into the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS)'s College of Fellows.

CPRS names fellows in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of public relations and communications management.

Szustaczek has headed ��ֱ�� Communications since 2023, overseeing an award-winning, tri-campus team of writers, communications strategists, brand marketing professionals, digital and media relations specialists, videographers and photographers. Her role in enhancing internal communications and sharing ��ֱ��’s story – including the wide-ranging impact of the university’s world-leading research and scholarship – has been instrumental in the department’s success.

“I am honoured to join the ranks of so many giants in our field,” Szustaczek said. “Their collective achievement has transformed our profession - and the places we all serve - for the better. The fact that this award is peer reviewed makes the recognition all the more special.

“I thank the Canadian Public Relations Society for this tremendous honour and I commit to continuing to uphold my work to the highest standards expected of us so that I too can strive to be a model for others.”

The University of Toronto has received a congratulatory scroll from the City of Toronto in recognition of its leadership in sustainability.

��ֱ�� was awarded the scroll for its contributions as a founding member of the Green Will Initiative, which brings together large organizations that are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the City of Toronto’s net-zero strategy.

The scroll was presented by Toronto’s Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie at Hart House and accepted by Scott Hendershot, senior manager at ��ֱ��’s Sustainability Office, and Catherine Thorn, director, sustainability and energy management, on behalf of the university.

“��ֱ�� is proud to take on a leadership role in advancing environmental sustainability in the region by undertaking initiatives that deliver dramatic and rapid emissions reductions,” said Ron Saporta, chief operating officer, property services and sustainability. “Today’s recognition affirms that we’re on the right track as we pursue our ambition of becoming climate-positive, and in doing so, support the City of Toronto’s aggressive climate action strategy.”

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our colleagues in the City of Toronto to further advance our shared aim of a more sustainable future.”

Forty-two faculty members from the University of Toronto have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research.

Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping to train the next generation of highly skilled people.

Maria Hupfield, an assistant professor in ��ֱ�� Mississauga's department of English and drama, has received a 2025 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indiana.

Given every other year, the fellowship aims to bring Indigenous contemporary art to the forefront and cast a spotlight on the works of leading Indigenous artists from across the U.S. and Canada.

Hupfield, who is Anishinaabe and a member of Wasauksing First Nation, holds a Canada Research Chair in Transdisciplinary Indigenous Arts and is the director and lead artist at ��ֱ�� Mississauga's Indigenous Creation Studio. She also works with graduate students in the master of visual studies program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at ��ֱ��.

Her current research program comprises a community medicine garden, Indigenous creation studio and a living archive, with each space designed to facilitate the development of creative work grounded in Indigenous oral traditions and the natural world.

Fifteen faculty members from ��ֱ�� have been elected fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) for 2024 in recognition of excellence in health sciences.

Election to CAHS fellowship is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community.

“Election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences acknowledges outstanding contributions to the health sciences,” said Trevor Young, ��ֱ��'s vice-president and provost and the president of CAHS, in a press release. “We are proud of these fellows’ accomplishments, and we are honoured to welcome them to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.”

The University of Toronto has recognized 51 faculty members across its three campuses with Connaught New Researcher Awards.

The annual awards support early-stage researchers in the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and other fields – and aim to enhance their competitiveness for external awards. They are part of the Connaught Fund, Canada’s largest internal university research funding program.

“The Connaught New Researcher Awards are designed to help accelerate the research programs of our hugely talented early-career scholars as they establish themselves in their respective fields,” said Leah Cowen, ��ֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“I am excited to see their work on a range of important issues such as next-generation vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases, decarbonization retrofits and housing affordability, and the physics of wildfire-generated storms."

Six teaching assistants (TAs) and one graduate course instructor (CI) have been recognized with 2024 Teaching Excellence Awards by the University of Toronto’s Teaching Assistants’ Training Program.

The TA Teaching Excellence, BIPOC TA Teaching Excellence and CI Teaching Excellence awards recognize the outstanding contributions of TAs and graduate student CIs who regularly support, inspire and challenge undergraduate students.

The winner of this award for 2024 is Titilola Aiyegbusi from the department of English in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

The recipient of the CI Teaching Excellence Award is Kat Furtado from the department of classics in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Kent Moore, vice-principal, research at the University of Toronto Mississauga and Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Geophysics of Climate Change in the department of chemical and physical sciences, has been awarded a Patterson Distinguished Service Medal by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The prestigious award was created in 1946 in honour of meteorologist and ��ֱ�� alum Dr. John Patterson and recognizes outstanding contributions to meteorology in Canada.

Moore is renowned for his climate research in the Arctic and mountainous regions. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, received over 65 national and international grants and awards and given numerous media interviews on his research and issues related to climate change.

“I’m incredibly honoured,” said Moore, who is praised by peers for his collaborative nature, empathetic leadership and creative approach to research. “To join the ranks of Canada’s leaders in meteorology who have received this award before me — it means a great deal.”

“It’s also a testament to the contributions of the many students, fellows, and colleagues I’ve worked with over the years. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with such generous and committed scientists.”

“Professor Moore’s research program has transformed our understanding of the impacts of climate change in polar and mountainous regions,” said W. Richard Peltier, a University Professor in the department of physics at the Faculty of Arts & Science who nominated Moore for the award. “His highly interdisciplinary and internationally recognized body of knowledge has fostered excellence in climate science, contributing to Canada’s global leadership in the field.”

Moore received his Patterson Medal in a ceremony at the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Congress this June.
