It also looks at institutional policies, operational data, alumni impact and national data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and World Bank.

To determine environmental impact, the ranking evaluates environmental education, research and sustainability. For social impact, it examines employability and outcomes, equality, health and well-being, impact of education and knowledge exchange. And for governance, the ranking looks at indicators such as student representation and transparent financial reporting.

茄子直播 performed particularly well in the social impact category this year, moving up three spots to first globally. It also ranked fifth in the world for environmental impact and tied for 23rd in governance.

茄子直播鈥檚 performance led a robust showing by Canadian universities. The University of British Columbia shared fifth spot with University College London, making Canada the only country to have two universities in the top five. Two other Canadian universities placed in the top 50: McGill University (15th) and Western University (30th).

The QS sustainability ranking comes as 茄子直播 forges ahead with a host of climate-focused initiatives on its own campuses including: Project Leap, a $138-million infrastructure project that will cut emissions on the St. George campus in half by 2027; Project SHIFT, a 茄子直播 Mississauga initiative to speed up the transition from natural gas to electricity; and a combination of new climate-responsible constructions and energy retrofits to older buildings at 茄子直播 Scarborough.

Spurred by these and other efforts, the university鈥檚 three campuses last year made a landmark commitment to reduce more greenhouse gases than they emit in the coming years. And 茄子直播 continues to make progress on its pledge to divest from fossil fuel investments in its endowment fund.

At the same time, 茄子直播 is working to enhance Canada鈥檚 green energy sector through projects like the Grid Modernization Centre, a state-of-the-art facility led by Climate Positive Energy, an institutional strategic initiative, that will serve as a hub for testing, development and commercialization.

茄子直播 is also playing a leadership role in sustainability by engaging with regional, national and international partners. For example, the university acted as a founding member of the City of Toronto鈥檚 Green Will Initiative, collaborated with the Urban Climate Action Project to help implement the city鈥檚 TransformTO climate action strategy and contributed to the Toronto Region Board of Trade鈥檚 Banking on Green playbook, which helps Ontario organizations fund green retrofit projects.

Globally, 茄子直播 has convened networks aimed at mobilizing multi-sector partnerships, including the U7+ Alliance of World Universities, the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) and the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). 茄子直播鈥檚 sustainability leaders have also been asked to share knowledge and experiences with other universities in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Germany and other countries.

Most important, 茄子直播 is actively creating a new generation of sustainability leaders. Supported by the President鈥檚 Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability (CECCS), which recently created a new student leadership subcommittee, more than 2,000 undergraduate courses in 2024-25 now have a sustainability orientation.

Students also have the option of exploring sustainability from various lenses through the Sustainability Pathways program, or to contribute to projects on- and off-campus via the Campus as a Living Lab and Community-Engaged Learning programs.

Overall, 茄子直播 continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Education鈥檚 World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy鈥檚 Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

News home page banner

On

Tue, 10 Dec 2024 16:12:41 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 310934 at 茄子直播鈥檚 Geoffrey Hinton delivers Nobel lecture alongside co-laureate聽 /news/u-t-s-geoffrey-hinton-delivers-nobel-lecture-alongside-co-laureate 茄子直播鈥檚 Geoffrey Hinton delivers Nobel lecture alongside co-laureate

Christopher.Sorensen Mon, 12/09/2024 - 15:48

Cutline

茄子直播's Geoffrey Hinton, left, and John J. In its 2024 budget, Canada鈥檚 federal government made a significant reinvestment in the country鈥檚 research and talent. This included $1.8 billion over five years to the federal granting councils and $825 million to federally funded graduate scholarships, raising the value of doctoral scholarships to $40,000.

The federally supported scholarships, however, are competitive 鈥 most students do not receive them. The new funding commitment from 茄子直播 raises the minimum level that all PhD and SJD students receive.

鈥淚 have always loved 茄子直播, and it has allowed me to excel to places that I could only dream of. A donor鈥檚 $100,000 gift, combined with 茄子直播 matching funds, will create a $250,000 endowed award, which will generate an annual income of approximately $10,000. This will combine with other sources of funding to increase the pool of funds available for PhD students.

鈥淧hDs are our most research-intensive degrees and the students who pursue them spend a lot of time at the university,鈥 Barker said. 鈥淭heir work has helped make 茄子直播 the highest ranked university in Canada and one of the world鈥檚 top research institutions 鈥 and a large number of our PhDs go on to work across Canada in both academia and the private sector, strengthening the country鈥檚 economy and innovation landscape.

鈥淚nvesting in our PhDs means investing in Canada鈥檚 future.鈥

Barker noted the new funding initiative comes on the heels of extensive research and consultations. The working group鈥issued its report the following year, outlining its considerations and recommendations.

鈥淲e've heard the feedback, and the institution is now stepping up to do what's necessary to invest in our PhD students' well-being and success,鈥 Barker said.

Keshavarzian, a member of the tri-campus working group who previously directed Temerty Medicine's graduate representation committee, said the working group was key to understanding and addressing the concerns of graduate students across 茄子直播's three campuses.

鈥淭his structure has allowed鈥痷s to bring together diverse perspectives and create solutions at a university-wide level, rather than fragmenting the responsibility among various departments,鈥 said Keshavarzian, who earned her honours bachelor of science degree at 茄子直播 before returning for graduate studies.鈥淚鈥檓 incredibly proud to be part of an institution willing to take on such hard work, aligning resources and leadership to address challenges systematically.

鈥淭his collaborative approach has helped ensure that our university remains responsive to the needs of graduate students and committed to creating an environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.鈥

Read more at the School of Graduate Studies

News home page banner

Off

Tue, 12 Nov 2024 13:00:55 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310523 at Math grad says 茄子直播 taught him to 'learn how to learn' /news/math-grad-says-u-t-taught-him-learn-how-learn Math grad says 茄子直播 taught him to 'learn how to learn'

rahul.kalvapalle Wed, 11/06/2024 - 15:15

Cutline

Sean Fridkin, who earned a bachelor's in math and computer science, counts University Professor Emeritus and Nobel Prize-winner Geoffrey Hinton among his inspirations (supplied image)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Our Community

Convocation 2024

Computer Science

Faculty of Arts & Plus, the people are great ... it鈥檚 a great place to learn, grow and network.鈥

Fridkin spoke to 茄子直播 News about his interest in math and computer science, plans for the future and thoughts on how students can get the most out of their undergraduate years:

How did you become interested in mathematics and computer science?

I think math is about trying to understand the world. All around, you have things going on, things happening, and math is seeing the patterns and getting a deeper understanding for what鈥檚 going on. That鈥檚 always interested me. I think it interests most people 鈥 they just don鈥檛 know that it鈥檚 called math and there鈥檚 a language for it.

The way I did my math major is I took a bunch of courses in different fields, but the main thing that unifies them is they teach you to think about the world in different ways. You have classes about the closeness of objects, analysis, topology, you鈥檝e got to think about different types of infinities 鈥 You expand the way in which you think, and that interested me more than any specific path within mathematics.

In terms of computer science, I really like numerical methods, where you try to approximate 鈥 given some data 鈥 and interpolate with models to predict real things. I find machine learning numerical methods really fun.

What was your approach to learning while at 茄子直播?

The number one goal for me in university was to learn how to learn 鈥 and learn how to think about new things and discover new ways of thinking. That鈥檚 the thing 茄子直播 gave me. You get the opportunity to talk to lots of different people, lots of different perspectives and learn from professors who are very experienced in the field and often have a unique way of thinking about different problems.

Also, with the assignments, you have to push yourself and that鈥檚 what I enjoyed about it. It was a little different from high school, where an assignment might take you 30 minutes. Here, for some of the math classes, I would have to initially spend maybe a couple of days on one assignment. And I learned a lot from that. I think it鈥檚 going to impact me, not only as I go further in my career, but also in life.

What are your plans for your career and education going forward?

I鈥檓 looking for computer science roles. I want to learn from interesting people and work on interesting problems. That鈥檚 the main goal. I don鈥檛 have any specific field that I鈥檓 going for within computer science 鈥 just interesting problems and people who I know I鈥檒l be able to learn from and who I admire and respect.

I really enjoy learning, but I think most learning can be done informally, on your own or with good people at a company. But certainly, if there鈥檚 something interesting that I want to learn more about and that I can鈥檛 do on my own, I would 100 per cent go back to school.

Long term, I want to transition to something in the machine learning world.

What would be your advice to students starting university?

I think the actual coursework is secondary to what you do in university. You should learn how to approach new problems ... For me, since I was going into math and computer science, I read a little bit of math stuff and I mostly worked on brain teaser problems. That helped me much more than any domain knowledge in any of the fields.

As soon as you build that thought process in your head 鈥 as soon as that becomes your natural way of thinking 鈥 everything becomes so much easier.

News home page banner

Off

Wed, 06 Nov 2024 20:15:18 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310248 at 'A profound sense of responsibility': Wes Hall installed as 茄子直播's 35th chancellor /news/profound-sense-responsibility-wes-hall-installed-u-t-s-35th-chancellor 'A profound sense of responsibility': Wes Hall installed as 茄子直播's 35th chancellor

rahul.kalvapalle Fri, 11/01/2024 - 12:23

Cutline

Wes Hall, centre, is officially installed as 茄子直播鈥檚 35th chancellor in a ceremony attended by two of his predecessors in the role, Rose Patten, far left, and Vivienne Poy, not pictured, as well as Governing Council Chair Anna Kennedy, second from left, and 茄子直播 President Meric Gertler, at right (photo by Johnny Guatto)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Our Community

Convocation 2024

Trevor Young

Wesley Hall

Rose Patten

Chancellor

Faculty of Arts & He will then proceed to confer more than 4,000 degrees to graduating students during 10 ceremonies in Convocation Hall throughout the week.

Hall says he鈥檚 honoured to serve as an advocate and ambassador for an institution committed to empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers drawn from all sections of society.

鈥淭he University of Toronto, in my opinion, is the biggest source of upward mobility in Canada,鈥 said Hall, who began his term as chancellor on July 1, succeeding Rose Patten.

In particular, Hall cited the diversity of 茄子直播's student body, with representation from 180 countries and territories, and the university's extensive student financial supports 鈥 which include a pledge that no student admitted to the university should be prevented from studying because of a lack of financial means 鈥 as key elements that are setting the stage for a brighter future.

鈥淭hink about the impact that will have on our society moving forward,鈥 he says. 鈥淭his is why I wanted to be a part of this university. This is where change happens.鈥

For Hall, change didn鈥檛 come quickly or easily. After he moved out of his father鈥檚 home, he worked during the day and took courses in the evening to earn a law clerk certificate. He began his Bay Street journey as a mailroom clerk and law clerk, before eventually landing his first managerial role at CIBC Mellon, as a relationship manager.

As a young Black man managing 11 employees, many of whom were much older and white, Hall said earning the respect of his team was far from straightforward, teaching him importance of leaving his ego at the door.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 necessarily want to be the smartest person in the room. I want to be the person who figures the room out and understands how people there operate,鈥 he says.

Hall adds that figuring out what made his reports tick helped him turn his biggest detractors into powerful allies.

Years later, Hall would confront doubters again when he came up with a business idea for a service that provides strategic advice to shareholders on corporate governance matters. He pitched it to his then-employers. 鈥淭hey thought it was nuts,鈥 he says.

Undeterred, he approached banks for a loan so he could build the company on his own. 鈥淎nd they go, 鈥楾hat鈥檚 so wacky, we鈥檙e not going to fund that.鈥欌

Eventually, Hall convinced his wife to borrow $100,000, using their house as collateral. He used the funds to set up his firm, Kingsdale Advisors. That was in 2003. Today, Kingsdale is regarded one of Canada鈥檚 top shareholder services and advisory firms, while Hall is one of the most respected power brokers in Canadian business.

In recent years, his reputation has expanded beyond executive boardrooms into living rooms across the country as a sought-after investor on CBC鈥檚 Dragon鈥檚 Den, where he says he鈥檚 constantly inspired by the creativity and drive of Canada鈥檚 entrepreneurs. 鈥淢ost people come up with ideas in their mind, but entrepreneurs actually act on them 鈥 even ideas that are far-fetched in a lot of cases 鈥 and make it happen in spite of naysayers telling them they can鈥檛 do it,鈥 Hall says.

Hall says he鈥檚 passionate about using his platform to help uplift people from underrepresented backgrounds.

In 2020, following the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, he set up the BlackNorth Initiative, an NGO that provides scholarships for students, mentorship and networking for entrepreneurs, and a homeownership bridge program to help Black families own a home.

鈥淗ome ownership allowed me to start Kingsdale and create the value that I have today,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淚 want to create that same pride and opportunity for as many under-served families as possible.鈥

Hall has also sought to contribute to the empowerment of entrepreneurs through WeShall Investments, a private equity firm dedicated to supporting BIPOC-owned ventures.

Hall is mindful of the fact that his success story 鈥 and those of other immigrants, people of colour and people from other underprivileged backgrounds 鈥 shouldn鈥檛 be used to downplay the scale of inequality in society.

鈥淗ow many others are out there who have been deprived from fulfilling their true potential?鈥 he asks.

A staunch believer in 茄子直播鈥檚 mission to empower people of all backgrounds to flourish, Hall said he urges students to adopt a positive, forward-looking attitude to overcome obstacles.

He cited, as an example, Cree actor, artist and filmmaker Shirley Cheechoo, who said she preferred to be recognized as a 鈥渨arrior鈥 rather than a 鈥渟urvivor鈥 of Canada鈥檚 horrific residential school system. She made the remark during a keynote address at a 茄子直播 event to mark Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which Hall attended.

鈥淚 was successful in fighting, and it鈥檚 now my job to show people that in order for you to go through things successfully, you have to be a fighter,鈥 Hall says.

鈥淚t鈥檚 all about us changing our mindset and being more positive.
