University of Toronto ranked first in Canada, 24th in the world

ֱ’s strong academic and research performance continues to rank among the best in the world, according to new global ranking report

The University of Toronto is the top university in Canada and one of the best in the world, reports the Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities 2014.

This year, the prestigious ranking – which analyzes the top universities worldwide on research output, the quality of faculty and the quality of education – placed ֱ 24th in the world, up from 28th in 2013. Harvard University remained the top-ranked university.

The University also scored highly by subject field – placing 21st in Chemistry and rising in the ranks in the following areas, with some notable jumps:

  • Computer Science – 10th from 11th in 2013
  • Economics and Business – 24th from 48th
  • Social Sciences – 29th from 42nd

Shanghai Jiao Tong ranks universities by measuring objective indicators of academic or research performance. These include: alumni and faculty winning prestigious prizes and medals; highly cited researchers; articles published in Nature and Science; articles indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

More than 1,200 universities are ranked every year by Shanghai Jiao Tong which then publishes a list of the best 500. Alongside ֱ, three other Canadian universities made this year’s top 100: University of British Columbia, McGill University and McMaster University.

“To be recognized once again as one of the world’s leading universities is a testimony to the scholarship, creativity and innovation of our faculty, staff and students,” said Cheryl Regehr, vice-president and provost at ֱ. “This reflects not only their academic excellence but the impact of their research in Canada and throughout the world.”

Since Shanghai Jiao Tong’s rankings began in 2003, ֱ has consistently ranked in the top 30 of the world’s best universities and has consistently been the top Canadian performer.
